I am a marine biologist who is interested in the study of the mechanisms of sexual selection, that is, those evolutionary forces that lead to maximizing the reproductive success of an organism. In particular, I try to understand the interactions between climate changes, population dynamics and sexual selection mechanisms, mainly using fishes as study models. In my research activity I integrate different methodologies that include underwater activity in the field, experiments in captivity and physiological, histological and molecular analyzes in the laboratory.

My research is focused on studying the diversity, functions, and biotechnological potential of microbial communities in different marine ecosystems, especially under extreme environmental conditions. In particular, during my post-doc, I am studying marine microbes (mainly bacteria and fungi) for the development of advanced and innovative biotechnologies for reducing the sediment contamination levels of selected polluted marine areas (especially focusing on petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals). To do this, I study the microbial diversity and processes in highly-impacted coastal sites through molecular, bioinformatics, biochemical and analytical techniques, coupled with targeted isolation of microbial strains and laboratory experiments for marine sediment bioremediation approaches.

I am a graduate technician at the Oceanography Laboratory of the Department of Life and Environmental Sciences (DiSVA). I ​​am an expert in marine weather modeling systems, oceanographic data analysis with particular reference to the Adriatic Sea, oceanographic instrumentation, and advanced computing systems.

My research interest is the trophic and spatial ecology of elasmobranchs. My project focuses on understanding the trophic role and defining the niche of shark and ray mesopredators, and their importance within coastal ecosystem functions. Also, I am interested in determining if they present interspecific competition with other sympatric teleost fish. For this, I will use well developed and novel techniques, including stomach content and stable isotope analyses and compound-specific analysis of amino acids.

Research fellow at the Department of Life and Environmental Sciences. I am an experimental physical oceanographer with special interest in the dynamics and vertical structure of the ocean at various spatial and temporal scales. I combine the acquisition, processing, and analysis of hydrographic data from a variety of sources, including in-situ observations, reanalyses, and satellite data, in order to understand key processes in the Mediterranean Sea and Southern Ocean. Recently, I have been involved in several research projects assessing important water masses in the Ross Sea that impact, among other things, the stabilization of ice shelves surrounding the Antarctic ice sheet and the global thermohaline circulation.

I am a PhD student and my research interests are focused on the social and ecological role of cleaner fish and the fish community associated to them in temperate reefs. In particular, my research will be focusing on the use of field observations integrated with stable isotope and molecular analyses to better understand the direct and indirect feeding relationships of cleaner fishes.

I work in coastal microbiology, including lagoon areas, monitoring pathogenic microorganisms and characterizing bacterial biogeochemical cycles. I analyze microbial metabolism for the valorization of agro-industrial substrates in circular economy contexts. Previously, I have studied microbial resistance to metals and bacteria that degrade organic contaminants, both in Italy and abroad.

Ph.D. student at the Marine Science Group, under the “Innovative Technologies and Sustainable Use of Mediterranean Sea Fishery and Biological Resources” (FishMed-PhD) program at the University of Bologna, studying the use of citizen science activities for marine biodiversity monitoring, the effects of environmental education activities within a touristic context, the importance of engaging stakeholders on the development of comprehensive ecosystem management plans (participatory environmental management), as well as the impact of anthropogenic activities on the oceanographic properties of a coastal lagoon in southeast Spain.
